Agrupamento de Escolas Augusto Cabrita

The Augusto Cabrita Group of Schools is located in Barreiro, on the south bank of the Tagus River, in the District of Setúbal. It is a public school.

Our school patron, Augusto Cabrita, was a well-known photographer in our town and country. In our group of schools there are: three kindergartens; three primary schools; one elementary school and one secondary school.

Our main school is a Secondary school and it was built in 1987-1988. We have around two thousand and two hundred students and about hundred and eight teachers. Augusto Cabrita Group of Schools has got regular courses and professional courses.

The regular courses are aimed to all the students who wish to continue their studies until university offering a wide range of career choices in different areas such as: -Economics; Humanities; Science and Technology and Arts. The professional courses are divided into six different areas:

  • Informatics and Programing;

  • Electronic Automation;

  • Management;

  • Sports Management;

  • Marketing;

  • Tourism.

Many students in our school are not motivated to study. This lack of motivation in learning is increasing. Therefore, some are at risk of school exclusion and they give up school in spite of the teachers’ attempts to implement new strategies to make education more attractive to all. The majority comes from low/middle social background while others have a modest socioeconomic and cultural background. The economic crisis has reduced the number of working positions in our country and some of the students’ parents are facing serious financial and social problems. Therefore, they are not motivated to study and cannot be successful in the learning
process.

Some of our students may have learning disabilities, attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder and emotional or behavior disorders. Others belong to disadvantage ethnic groups or have prior truancy problems. Our motivation to participate in this project is to give students, regardless of their age, their different backgrounds and intellectual profiles, the necessary knowledge for professional and social fulfillment, to stimulate their confidence and to foster their self-esteem. We believe that by engaging this project all students can become more aware of the importance of sustainability and the need to move forward technologically and economically, as to protect the environment in which we live and how it can be improved.

The teachers involved have studied English language, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Arts, as well as other school subjects, and they are all familiar with new technologies. They have got experience in European programs and they are all willing to enrich their teaching methods with innovating didactic tools. At the same time they all love teaching and are aware of their students’ needs. Therefore, they’re all willing to cooperate and exchange teaching experience with European schools.
